News from the Ballantyne Area

THOUGHTS ON THE DUMP. When the late John Belk, a Belk department store heir, was mayor of Charlotte, he was at a meeting. In the meeting: residents of the ‘West Side’ of Charlotte, which, 30 years ago was mostly white working class. Belk was working on expanding the airport–which is right in middle of the West Side. At the time, the West Side was also the location of the dump, which is now Renaissance Park. Someone asked Belk, “Why are you putting the airport on the West Side?” Belk replied: “BECAUSE THAT’S WHERE THE PLANES LAND.”

For the past 10 years, having a construction waste landfill in the Ballantyne area has not been a picnic. All those trucks with their windshield-shattering debris. But a REAL dump is a problem. There are lots of moving parts here: Local companies with a vested interest in the area; Neighborhoods; the big money in the garbage business; dwindling government budgets. But here’s the biggest problem of all…seven people on the County Commission do not care about the Ballantyne area. It’s not their power base. All but a couple of commissioners answer to the people in the Ballantyne area. For the others, the Ballantyne area is a good source of revenue, which they can spread around the rest of the county.

To these commissioners, the answer to the question, “why put a dump in Ballantyne?” is “because that’s where the garbage trucks will go.” You watch. This thing is going to happen. It will be actual garbage or ash.

Good luck dealing with this one.
